"Unity of Elemental Precursors"

Black India Ink, Pen, Pencil, White Acrylic Ink on 6 Arches Board Panels

2020

30" x 50"

Here I present a continuation with my central theme of harmony between humanity and the natural world. I began this elemental series with the two central portraits for a class assignment called "Labor of Love," and the remaining four panels were added afterward as an Independent Studio Project to complete the series.

I have created a larger landscape from smaller, individual portrait panels. Each piece has the means to act alone and also knit together with one another. The purpose here is to illustrate the connection humanity has to these elements in a realistic sense: we all come from these things, or are incredibly influenced by these pinnacles, on this Earth. Each friend I have chosen to represent an element is connected by their zodiac sign, as either an Earth, Air, Water, or Fire sign. They are illustrated intertwining with that element’s influence in these pieces.

Every piece I make requires observation. I'm here to translate what I see in little pieces of the real world and turn them into something new for others to see and enjoy.

I have become very fine tuned to drawing freehand from life or reference image instead of using a grid system. Though I have used it in the past to learn, I feel it would now hinder me, like I am looking through a screen window and not focusing on what actually matters in the work.

The majority of my work I either draw from life or I photograph my own references. I am here to produce ethical and original works that connect to the viewer and to myself, as well as create fun and functional work, such as decals, coasters, and door hangers. A little piece of art to have around that also serves another purpose is to me, a great addition to life.
